Middleton Cycling Club was formed in 1941 from a club called the Tonge Cycling Pack; the membership at the time was eight. The number of members has fluctuated throughout the history of the club and at one time peaked at 96. However, we currently have 35 active members, who are aged from fourteen upwards.
Our President is Harry H Hill, who during his career won a Bronze Medal in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany. He also set a new 1 Hour record in Italy and travelled coast to coast across America. In his more mature years he set a new world 1 hour record at the Manchester Velodrome for his age category (80+), and in spring 2006 he was invited to Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen as part of the Olympic Team celebrations.
Jack Ramsden is our only founder member who joined Middleton Cycling Club in 1941.
Jack is very active, organising various social events, and is kept busy during club
organised events -
We organise regular monthly club runs, which usually take place on the last Sunday of each month (refer to our diary page) and we also arrange regular sessions at the Manchester Velodrome for members of the club who like to ride the track.
The club has recently revised the list of club awards ready for the 2008 racing season. The list of awards can be viewed on our Awards Page. If you would like to view a list of the Prize Winners for the 2007 season click here.
Once a year (usually in early February) we organise the Annual Lunch & Prize Presentation during which we enjoy a three course meal, a speech from a chosen guest of honour (Gerry Shield is this years Guest of Honour)and the prize giving ceremony.
